Mt. PISGAH BAPTIST CHURCH
Normal, Illinois
This long established congregation
is now enjoying a new home. Designed by AR&D architects and built by
P. J. Hoerr contractors. There is a lot of building squeezed into
the modest lot on Market street.
The growing congregation enjoys
and energized style of worship. The mass choir will fill the 160
seat choir loft. The room will seat over 700 on the main floor and
balcony. Note the yet unfinished control booth at the front of the
balcony. A Soundcraft 32 input console is the heart of the
system. Other support equipment will set next to the console.
The negative space ceiling above the main
floor and platform allow the stage lights, speakers and acoustic panels to
hide above the house lighting. The main and monitor speakers are all from
Community. (Although it makes it hard to take a picture. Can you find the
main cluster and the choir monitors?)
The amplifier/processing rack is located in
it's own closet, beneath the choir loft. These pictures show the rack
during our inspection and calibration. The sound contractor, Bennett
Electronics, added side panels and blank panels after we left.
They did an excellent job building this system.
The sub woofers are not in the most ideal
position, but the compromise should work out well. The subs are
custom built units from Concert Systems LLC. Hidden behind the grills on
either side of the room are single 800 watt 15" subs.
The sub woofer grills use the same fabric
as the acoustic panels on the side walls and front railing of the
balcony. The acoustic treatment is just enough to minimize flutter
echoes in the room, but not enough to "deaden" the room so that
you can always enjoy the congregational singing.
Leon volunteered to help test out the
system. He has a very smooth voice.
