OZARK CHRISTIAN
COLLEGE
Joplin, Missouri
O.C.C. is an independent Christian college training servant leaders
for expanding the kingdom of God. Now in their 66th year of operation, they have
a beautiful campus on the north side of Joplin. Jordan Audio Consultants
has been engineering systems on campus since our beginning.
Multi Purpose Building : a combination gymnasium, auditorium and sports
center. It will seat about 1500 for ball games and 2000 for concerts.
The building is now 27 years old. For the first ten years it didn't
have any installed sound system. Portable systems were brought in every
time an event occurred. This quickly became a tiresome chore that no one
wanted to sweat over. In the late 1980's an extensive acoustic
treatment project tamed the 3.3 second reverb down to 1.5 seconds and the room
became a useable and a pleasant concert venue.
In 1991 the alumni association raised $20.000 to install a
sound system. This was about half of what was needed to accomplish the
goal, so Gary Jordan was contacted to design as much of a system as
possible without making huge compromises in component quality.
The
decision was made to build a very high output, high definition system with
limited coverage. (We intentionally left areas of seating uncovered.) We
installed a main cluster to address the center of the main floor and theater
seating and supplemented the balcony seating with a delay line of speakers. All
the speakers were JBL Professional. 40 microphone lines and a patchbay were
installed. A rack of Crown amplifiers and Ashly processing was wired
and calibrated. No console was added, but a portable unit was brought in
for events. (This was a compromise, but not bad compared to carrying in a
whole system.)
In 2001 the alumni association again raised $20,000 to
update, upgrade and expand their system. This included reworking the main
cluster. Supplemental speaker were added to the main floor,
upstairs
landings, bleacher seating as well as adding ceiling speakers in the foyers, restrooms, and
backstage areas.
The worn out floor pockets on the platform were replaced (these had gotten a lot
of use.) The patch bays (which only one student had ever figured out) were
removed and the control booth was relocated to a larger, better
location.
The speakers are again all JBL Professional, the amplifiers are all
Crown, the processing is now dbx, with the main system
utilizing digital "Drive Rack" systems. This change allowed
for much greater control and security for the main system. New analogue
limiter-eq's were added for all four monitor mixes. (An overhead choir monitor
horn was added for the few times a year a choir is on stage.)
In the summer of 2007, following a very
serious lighting storm and some untimely equipment failures, the aging Crown
CT series amplifiers were replaced with new, more efficient CTs series
amplifiers. The overall wattage for the system increased about 20
percent. The AC outlet filters with surge suppressors were also
replaced.
Chapel
Auditorium: an 1100 seat auditorium used for bi-weekly worship
services, music department recitals, fall and spring semester
musical productions and home to a 3 manual, 46 rank Shantz pipe organ.
A group of six new floor monitors from Concert
Systems LLC were added in the spring of 2006. Four boxes are two-way coaxial
"Silver Bullet" systems. Two boxes are two-way high output
"Daisy Cutter" systems. All the systems were delivered
unfinished. The college personal painted the boxes to suit their decor.
New dual 15" Concert Systems LLC
AVL-215 sub woofer were added in the fall of 2006. Powered by Crown and processed by
dbx, this system augments an evolving system that changes with each
event in the room. The subs were delivered unfinished. The
college personal painted boxes to suit their decor.
The Soundcraft series Two console supports
normal worship events and becomes essential when producing a Living
Christmas Tree extravaganza or a Broadway type of musical in the spring.
Banquet Room:
a 400 seat multi-sectional space used for meal functions, training
sessions, alumni meetings, and just about any type of event you can
picture in a banquet room.
The simple system uses an 8 channel mixer
in a mobile cart, wall mounted speakers and a small rack of processing
and amplifiers in a utility space.
